Priority for rural students wanting to study medicine
In good news for rural students wanting to study medicine, Griffith University is now offering a priority access scheme which will see a minimum 25 per cent of its quota coming from rural backgrounds. Called the Griffith University Rural Priority Access Scheme (GURPAS), it will see eligible students who have lived in rural areas of Australia for five years consecutively or 10 years collectively, the chance to study a Doctor of Medicine as part of a separate rural quota. Hands-on learning produces quality rural doctors
Doctors in rural areas sometimes have to rely on their wits more than advanced technology, as fourth year medical students Rebecca Calder and Michelle Burnham can attest. Both Rebecca and Michelle have completed half of their medical education in country hospitals and will now finish off their final year with a six-week stint in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Rebecca is keen to pursue a rural career in maternal health and Michelle is interested in tropical medicine so PNG was an appropriate choice for their selective placement. Read More
