Toowoomba Hospital’s Occupational Therapists (OT) have provided, for the first time, placements to OT students from Griffith University.
“We’re really delighted to have two of the students from the Griffith University OT course with us,” said Wendy White, Occupational Therapist with the Chronic Disease Team at Toowoomba Hospital.
“The OT course has been running for just three years at Griffith so these are their first students to come through and do a placement with us.
“We’ve been very impressed with the level of knowledge they have and the genuine excitement they’ve shown about being the best OTs they can be.”
Students, Bryony Van Hoffen and Alice Murray, said their first block placement had provided them with an excellent experience.
“In our first and second years we did one morning a week, but this has been our first block placement it has been fantastic,” Bryony said.
Bryony’s colleague Alice Murray said the practical aspects of the placement had been a highlight.
“We’ve helped to run the MOPS (Major Orthopaedic Pre-admission Screening) sessions, which involved seeing people before their total knee or hip replacement surgeries which was something we hadn’t done previously,” Alice said.
“We’ve also been on quite a few home visits, so we’ve had the opportunity to do home assessments and provide recommendations.
“Probably one of the most important things about this first block placement has been our involvement with the multidisciplinary chronic disease team.
“Everyone has been very welcoming and it’s been great to see the way people from the various disciplines work together.”
