The distribution of carbamazepine in human secretions

 (GU Ref no: 2019/639)

This study aims to investigate the levels of Tegretol (carbamazepine) in the blood and secretions (saliva and vaginal) of women currently taking this drug. This study will also collect blood and secretion samples from women who are not taking Tegretol (carbamazepine) for comparison.

Type of volunteers needed

Women between the ages of 18 and 55 who are not menopausal.

Potential participants must:

  • Currently OR not be taking at least 200mg/day of Tegretol (carbamazepine; trade names Tegretol 100, Tegretol CR 200, Tegretol CR 400 and Carbamazepine Sandoz)
  • Not have been diagnosed with a mental illness
  • Not be pregnant
  • Not currently be involved in an interventional trial

What would I be asked to do? How much time would it take?

Potential participants will be screened for eligibility using the above criteria. Eligible participants will be asked to attend an approximately one hour appointment at the Griffith University Clinical Trial Unit on the Gold Coast Campus where they will complete a brief questionnaire and provide a blood, saliva and vaginal secretions sample. The vaginal secretions sample will be collected by a self-inserted tampon.

What’s in it for me?

You will be compensated for your time and travel with a $200 Visa gift card.
